A Milford man had a stockpile of homemade bombs in his basement, according to police.
Officers arrested Jason Bayard Friday, accusing him of manufacturing pipe bombs and the illegal possession of explosives. Local police called in the State Police Bomb Unit to remove the devices.
Bayard's mother, Cheryl, told Milford police in August that her son was making explosives and Molotov cocktails at her father's home on Victory Drive.
Family members say Bayard was paranoid and afraid of being attacked.
Bayard was diagnosed with schizophrenia 10 years ago and was reportedly skipping his medications. In a police statement, his mother said that he was being treated at Yale Psychiatric Institute and frequently talked to himself about conspiracy theories.
She also told police that her son was once in the Army Reserve and had probably researched how to make homemade weapons.
Neighbors who knew Bayard say he mostly kept to himself, and they didn't realize there were dangerous explosives on their street.
Bayard is being held on $75,000 bond.
