Fairfield's annual Penguin Plunge was held Saturday morning to benefit the Special Olympics in Connecticut.

Special Olympic athletes, friends and family were invited to jump in and make a splash at Jennings Beach Saturday morning for a good cause.

Participants jumped into the chilly water in support of Special Olympics and their year-round sports, health and fitness programs for people of all abilities.

Everyone involved had to raise at least $100 and be at least 8 years old.

Money was raised online in support of the organization and its mission, and those who came out to watch were also welcome to donate to the cause.

The plunge was followed by some music, refreshments and an award ceremony. The event raised more than $40,000, which will go toward training, uniforms and anything else the athletes need to compete.
