There was no plea deal Thursday for the Milford teen accused of stabbing and killing a fellow classmate at Jonathan Law High School.
Both sides now say they need an extra month to hammer out a possible plea bargain.
Court documents reveal that Christopher Plaskon admitted to killing 16-year-old Maren Sanchez in 2014 after she refused to go to the prom with him. Both sides say a deal would rest on Plaskon's mental state.
The judge on Thursday said he wants all parties to take some more time in the matter.
According to search warrants, Plaskon's parents told police that he "had a significant history dealing with mental health issues," and Plaskon himself said he "hears voices and that is the reason he did what he did."
In letters written in jail, Plaskon allegedly bragged about getting just one or two years in prison with an insanity defense.
If the murder charge against Plaskon is reduced to manslaughter, he would only face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and most likely serve less time due to his age.
The next court date is set for Feb 23.
