Two people are facing charges for allegedly stealing a 4-week-old kitten from Milford Animal Control Saturday.
Police say they responded to a burglar alarm to find a smashed window and unlocked door.
Jeffrey Domeracki, of Milford, and Alexis Nagy, of Stratford, were arrested after an investigation.
Workers say the pair first took Tommy, a large, older cat, out of his cage and then swapped him with the kitten in the back room.
"Since the cat is technically the sicker of the cats, we have here. It was very concerning that the cat was taken and we didn't know what could have happened, but luckily the time frame from when it happened to when we got the cat back was relatively short," said office administrator Gary Farrar. Farrar says Domeracki and Nagy moved about the office before setting their sights on the kitten.
"They did kind of go through the whole office looking at different rooms, they tried to get into the directors office which was closed, they went down to the kennel to see the dogs, they went into the kitchen," said Farrar.
The kitten was found unharmed and taken back to the animal shelter. He does not have a name yet and is not ready for adoption. He will go to foster care before returning to animal control.
