A Cornell University student from Mansfield Center has been charged for carrying a rifle and a box of ammo on the campus of Syracuse University Saturday, police say.

Police say following a report of a possible armed individual, Syracuse University Department of Public Safety took Mateu Healey-Parera into custody outside of the student center. The incident happened before the men's basketball game.

Officers recovered a firearm and two boxes of ammunition.

Healey-Parera took a bus from Ithaca to Syracuse, but it's not clear why he visited the school.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon on school grounds.

Police say Healey-Parera was arraigned but unable to post bond.

Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Police say they have requested a court order which allows officers to search the home of someone who is thought to be a danger to themselves or others.

Authorities say Healey-Parera will be brought to a hospital if released.
