Police in Bridgeport say they found a man dead inside a vehicle after responding to shots fired Thursday morning.
They received a call shortly after 8 a.m. of gunfire erupting on Fox Street near Canfield Avenue, according to detectives.
Responding officers found the car crashed into a tree at the intersection and a man with gunshot wounds to his torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Capt. Brian Fitzgerald says the incident is unusual for the neighborhood.
"It's generally a quiet, residential community. We don't believe at this point that it's a random act of violence. This was something that was targeted toward this particular victim, and we're looking to find out why," he said.
Natalie Menesis, who lives nearby, also said this type of incident is rare for the area.
"I'm in shock now that you mention it, like, that's — oh my God," she said. "Rest in peace — and I hope the family can be in peace, too. I am sorry for your loss."
Shaila Russel says she moved into the neighborhood because it is known for being safe.
"I feel horrible. Nothing bad ever happens here. This is Black Rock," she said.
Police say the neighborhood is filled with security cameras, which will help investigators figure out exactly what happened, including who pulled the trigger.
The identity of the 44-year-old is being withheld pending notification of kin. His death is the 15th homicide in Bridgeport this year.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Detective Winkler at 203-581-5224, or call 203-576-TIPS.
