Stamford police say a man robbed a convenience store Monday afternoon and then made the mistake of asking a police officer for directions.
Police say 26-year-old Donald Newman-Smith took almost $1,000 from the Hope Street Mini Mart near Camp Avenue. They say he passed a note to the store clerk but did not brandish a gun.
Newman-Smith approached an officer shortly after the robbery, according to police, and asked for directions to an upscale bakery. The officer did not realize that Newman-Smith was a suspect at the time, but police say surveillance video later confirmed it was him.
The suspect was found at the nearby bakery, eating expensive cookies and drinking espresso.
