A suspect in a Bridgeport shooting investigation was arrested after he plowed into another vehicle during a pursuit Wednesday, police say.
Police say it began with a reported shooting on Helen Street around 10:45 a.m.
They quickly identified the suspect's car but say he refused to pull over, instead taking off and leading police on a chase through the city and into Fairfield.
"They came into our town and one intersection up, about 800 feet up, the fleeing suspect vehicle which happened to be a silver Hyundai Elantra entered the intersection of Villa Avenue and Tunxis Hill and struck a white pickup truck," says Fairfield Police Lt. Antonio Granata.
The force of the crash flipped the truck on its roof and spun the car around, with both vehicles suffering major damage.
Witnesses saw the truck's driver somehow crawl out of a broken window.
Police identified the car's driver as 25-year-old Mark Anthony Febres.
Fairfield's accident reconstruction team will determine how fast he was going when he ran the red light.
"While investigators were on scene, they discovered a handgun in the suspect vehicle; in the Hyundai; and it was also later discovered that that vehicle was reported stolen out of Norwalk," says Granata.
Febres went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say he will face weapons and motor vehicle charges.
The driver of the truck also went to the hospital but is expected to recover.
"It's unfortunate that some innocent bystander got hurt here," says Granata.
Febres was out on bond at the time of the crash. He's accused of attempted murder in the stabbing of his estranged girlfriend.
