PriceRite and Feed the Children teamed up to fight childhood hunger with a big food giveaway in Torrington Thursday.
The distribution took place in the PriceRite parking lot on Main Street.
It was part of PriceRite and Feed the Children's “Feeding Minds & Bodies” campaign.
PriceRite and Feed the Children partnered with the United Way, among other organizations, to distribute two weeks' worth of food to 800 families in Litchfield County.
The families also received personal care items, like lotion and shampoo, along with a children's book.
"Inflation and the price of groceries has made it very difficult for families to make ends meet," Mayor Elinor Carbone said. "So this is filling a gap that has been identified and continues to grow."
The distribution was one of eight taking place this year as part of the “Feeding Minds & Bodies” campaign.
Organizers say since the campaign began in 2015, it's served more than 40,000 families across the northeast.
The great thing for us is we do it in the communities where our stores exist," PriceRite director of human resources Jon Wiltrout said. "Our team is a huge part of it. These are our neighbors. So I really think that's an important part of it."
