Parents throughout the area are concerned about how their children will cope with information about the school shooting in Newtown that left 27 people, including the gunman, dead.

Psychoanalyst Maud Purcell, of the Life Solution Center in Darien, says it is extremely important to keep the lines of communication open to children at this time. In addition, she says it is imperative that parents remain strong for their kids and let them know that 'their world' is going to be alright.

According to Purcell, it's better to be proactive when discussing the events and to start a conversation. It is also recommended that parents let kids know every precaution is being taken to keep them safe at school.

Investigators say a gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary School this morning and opened fire. Of the 27 total people killed, 20 were children. AP sources have identified the gunman as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the son of a teacher.
