A prominent Republican is explaining controversial comments she made after conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s murder.
Last week, Fairfield Representative Town Meeting member Melissa Longo posted on Facebook: “F*** the left ... we are done playing with you ... All of you are faithless, God hating evil, vile people.”
Fairfield Republicans
called for Longo to resign over the posts.
On Tuesday, Longo said that she will not resign from the RTM board. News 12 Connecticut asked if she views Democrats as “evil, vile people.”
“I think that the radicals are – the people that celebrate the death of an innocent man,” she said. “No matter where you are on the political spectrum, anyone who celebrates that or doesn’t denounce it, are vile, evil people. I think we can all agree on that.”
Longo apologized for using profanity in her post, but also accused Democrats of using incendiary language.
“I do think I’m being held to a double standard,” she said. “I, obviously going forward, would not be posting anything like that on my personal page anymore. And I think the attention that I’ve gotten over this, you know, is really about, at the end of the day, free speech.”
Democrats said this isn't the first time Longo has posted inflammatory rhetoric.
"This is not an isolated incident," Fairfield Democrats said in a statement. "Ms. Longo has a long history of posting inflammatory, hateful commentary online — including anti-trans, pro-gun, and anti-Democrat attacks. Time and again, her Party has looked the other way. Fairfield Republicans have enabled this extremism by refusing to hold their own members accountable."
