People throughout southwestern Connecticut got a chance to kick back and cool off Wednesday as local communities set up cooling centers amid soaring temperatures.
The Stamford Government Center was used as one such center. Only a few took advantage, but those who did said it was a nice break from the oppressive heat.
The music and the AC were blasting at The Milford Senior Center as well. The center extended its hours for the evening, hoping to keep seniors cool.
The city of Norwalk also set up cooling centers.
The combination of the humidity and haze produced dangerous breathing conditions in southwestern Connecticut, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
The EPA issued air quality warnings for the area. Those with respiratory problems and those who use oxygen to help them breathe were urged to stay inside.
Experts said people without respiratory problems should be OK in the thick air. However, they warned it is always best to be cautious and limit outdoor activity.
