Some Fairfield residents were evacuated from their homes Monday afternoon after a gas leak was reported on Fairfield Beach Road.
Fire officials say a machine operator working at the construction site of a new home hit a gas line just before 4 p.m.
Since then, fire officials say they tested for combustibles within 5 feet of the leak and readings have come back safe.
Fire officials say the road is back open and the residents that were evacuated are back at home.
