Family and friends are mourning the loss of a Woodbridge man who died in a hiking accident Sunday night.
Sam Shekman, 20, left his family's home at around 5 p.m. Sunday to go hiking. When he did not return home that evening, his family called police to report him missing at around 11 p.m. Police found Shekman's body early Monday morning about a half-mile into West Rock Woods on Bradley Street. Police say crews had to access the area on ATVs because the area is so remote.
An autopsy on Shekman was completed today and the medical examiner says he died of blunt impact to the head and torso. Police say he accidentally fell off a cliff.
Shekman graduated from Amity Regional High School in 2012 and played on the school's rugby team. According to his Facebook page, he was a student at Eastern Connecticut State University.
