Greenwich school and town leaders met with parents Tuesday night to discuss what is being done after toxins were found in Western Middle School's fields.

As News 12 has reported, the district closed the fields at the beginning of the school year as a precaution.

School officials tested samples of soil over the summer and found elevated levels of arsenic, lead and other toxins.

Officials say they followed up and conducted a health risk assessment, which they sent to the state Department of Health. They found that the level of toxins are too low to cause any negative health effects.

Still, the company that conducted the tests recommended excavating parts of the field and disposing of the soil off site.

State health officials agreed with the recommendations for remediation. Greenwich school officials have also been in touch with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which has requested further testing. The fields will not be reopened until the remediation process is completed.
