LaGuardia Airport closed following fatal collision between Air Canada jet, fire truck
Travelers are being hit with delays on area roadways and canceled flights Monday after two pilots were killed and several others badly hurt when an Air Canada regional jet struck a fire truck on a runway while landing at LaGuardia Airport.
Air Canada set up a phone line for family and friends of passengers on the flight for assistance – 1-800-961-7099.
The airport is shut down and on a ground stop until 2 p.m. to facilitate the National Transportation and Safety Borad with their investigation.
In addition, drivers can expect residual delays on the Grand Central Parkway entrances and exits to and from LaGuardia Airport in Queens following a previous closure.
Early Monday, some passengers who had arrived at LaGuardia hours before their flights hoping to beat security lines during the ongoing government funding lapse straggled out of the airport, rebooked for Tuesday. Others were hastening to other airports, as far as Long Island MacArthur in suburban Ronkonkoma, to try to catch their flights.
Hundreds of flights were canceled and delayed as of 6 a.m.
LaGuardia was 19th busiest in 2024 out of more than 500 U.S. airports, with over 16.7 million passengers boarding there, according to a 2025 FAA database.
