(05/30/08) NEW YORK - The New York City medical examiner says a second person has died as a result of the construction crane collapse on Manhattan's Upper East Side.
The medical examiner's spokeswoman, Ellen Borakove, says the victim was a 27-year-old man, Ramadan Kurtas. The accident Friday also killed the crane's operator, identified as 30-year-old Donald Leo of Staten Island.
The construction crane smashed into a nearby 23-story apartment building as it crashed onto the street below.
It was the second deadly crane accident in 2½ months in the city, which is undergoing a building boom. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the latest collapse was "unacceptable," and the city would investigate.
The mayor said seven buildings have been evacuated as a precaution following the collapse.
