The S.P.C.A. Animal Shelter is bringing 80 dogs and puppies from Puerto Rico to southwestern Connecticut in an effort to save their lives and find them new homes.

The dogs are known as "satos," which is Spanish slang for street dogs. According to the SPCA, the homeless dogs roam free through the streets looking for food and have little chance for survival.

"We started taking strays from Puerto Rico five or six years ago because there's really no homes for the strays that roam the islands," Frank Acker says.

The shelter says this event is one of the largest pet adoption events of the year, which begins on Friday. The director says that there are people planning to spend the night at the shelter, and there are already between 30 to 40 people that have filled out applications for the dogs.
