A book drive is being held at a firehouse in Shelton to benefit the memorial fund of a teacher slain in the Sandy Hook shooting.
Echo, Hose, Hook and Ladder Company is hosting the book drive Saturday to help the Vicki Soto Memorial Fund.
Vicki Soto lost her life in December 2012 in the Sand Hook shooting in Newtown. She died trying to protect her first-grade students in the classroom.
The drive is accepting new or lightly used books for all ages, but especially books for kindergarten to 12th grade reading levels.
All books will benefit the Miss Soto’s Literacy Legacy Program and the Shelton School District to fill their libraries.
Last year, more than 1,200 books were collected at the firehouse. At this year’s event, they say they hope to collect even more.
Echo, Hose, Hook and Ladder Co. President Kristen Ostrowski helped to set up the event.
"I think reading is so important for all ages, elementary through high school, and even to continue on from there,” Ostrowski says. “I think her program was designed for children to get a better array of books."
Books can be donated at the firehouse throughout Saturday afternoon.
