The bitter blast made it tough for evening commuters and people working outside on Tuesday.

Wind chills are expected to be in the single digits and below zero Tuesday night, and it is just part of the coldest air so far this winter.

The good news is DSNY dropped more than 20 million pounds of salt on the roads since Sunday.

While that helps eliminate black ice, people should watch out for any untreated surfaces that have frozen over and will stay icy for the coming days.

News 12 drove around Westchester Square and Parkchester and found some icy sidewalks, bus stops, and crosswalks.

Maria Rivera, a school crossing guard in Parkchester, said she was spending two hours outside to make sure children and adults were safe.

The crossing guard had some crossing tips.

“Try not to run, be careful,” Rivera said. “It’s slippery out here. They don’t want to hurt themselves.”
