Some West Sayville residents say they're in opposition of plans to bring a drive-thru Starbucks to their neighborhood.

This Thursday, the Town of Islip will decide if a former bank building on Montauk Highway should be turned into a Starbucks with a large drive-thru.

However, some in the community say the drive-thru will cause massive traffic on Montauk Highway and nearby roads in addition to changing the character of the area.

Vincent Pezzuto took a gamble opening a coffee shop in the middle of the pandemic. But Cool Beans became a hit, partly because he was the only coffee shop in the area and not near a chain coffeehouse.

"Here we are, open for business, and now Starbucks wants to go right across the street," Pezzuto says.

Competition aside, many in the Sayville community say they're not pleased about the idea of a large Starbucks with a 20-plus car drive-thru wanting to build at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Montauk Highway. Neighbors say the intersection that's near a firehouse and other businesses is already too busy and will only cause more accidents with cars and possibly people.

The Sayville Chamber of Commerce says it has nothing against Starbucks itself. It's just that the proposal to change the zoning of the former bank building into a fast-food location with the drive-thru has been plagued with problems and will only cause more.

"We all know what a Starbucks drive-thru looks like. There are always cars waiting," says the Chamber of Commerce's Eileen Tisnar.

Tisnar says she hopes the Town of Islip will deny the zoning change. Otherwise, she fears it could change the character of the village and lead to more accidents at the intersection.

"The Town of Islip better really consider their decision or there could be blood on their hands," Tisnar says.

The town will hold a virtual meeting Thursday evening on the matter and for the moment will not allow public comment.
