Southwestern Conn. tries to cope with messy roads
Southwestern Connecticut residents were dealt another messy day on the roads Wednesday as a constant downpour threatened to flood certain areas.
A flood watch will remain in effect for the area through Thursday morning. Weather conditions were blamed for numerous accidents, while more than 100 schools had delayed openings Wednesday.
The steady rain and melting snow from Tuesday night's storm frayed nerves in Darien, an area that is prone to flooding. Business owners along Heights Road watched the rainfall while Cherry Street residents hoped Stony Brook, which flows in front of Town Hall, would not crest.
"I know the brook is high. It's not overflowed yet," said longtime Darien resident Ann Boyle. "We're not having torrential rain and all you can do is just hope for the best 'cause there's nothing we can do about it."In March 2007, the same area was under nearly 3 feet of water.
Darien First Selectwoman Evonne Klein said the town is making progress in its fight against flooding. According to Klein, town officials could vote next month on a $17 million, five-year drainage strategy.
