Stamford Mayor David Martin, a Democrat, fended off two challengers to win re-election in a three-way race that was one of the most heated contests in the state this campaign season.
"I don't recall any time in the city where the Democratic party was as successful as we were tonight," he told cheerful supporters after results came in.
He beat out Republican Barry Michelson and Independent John Zito, Jr.
The campaign focused on rapid development in the city. Martin has been accused by his fellow candidates of moving too fast on some projects.
The incumbent held a considerable fundraising lead, although he stressed that he wasn't taking anything for granted.
