Police are investigating a dirt bike accident that killed a Stamford man over the weekend.
Friends and family set up a memorial for 23-year-old Oscar Chinchilla-Najarro at Scalzi Park in Stamford, where police say he was driving a friend's dirt bike Friday night, lost control of the bike and crashed into a guardrail.
"His friend let him ride it and the end result was him unfortunately crashing and getting killed," said Stamford police Sgt. Jeffrey Booth.
Police say Chinchilla-Najarro was not wearing a helmet. They say he died of one of the worst head injuries they've ever seen.
"I don't think he had a lot of riding experience from what I was told it was only his first or second time on a bike and riding around on a dirt bike in a park in the dark with no headlight is obviously dangerous," said Booth.
Police say Chinchilla-Najarro was coming around a corner at high rate of speed when he crashed.
Police say dirt bikes are not meant to be driven on pavement.
"They're not legal on the street, nor are they made to be ridden on asphalt, the way the tires are designed and the suspension is designed they are made to be ridden on dirt," said Booth.
Police say they have pulled some dirt bikes over and towed them. They say there are designated places where they can be driven.
