The Stamford YMCA announced it?s closing its doors after 139 years in the community.

YMCA officials say declining enrollment and rising costs led to the decision to close. The YMCA, which has a motto of building strong kids, strong families, and strong communities, is losing a bit of its own strength.

Before the doors close permanently, programs and activities will be phased out slowly.

The YMCA does have plans to open a new facility somewhere in the city similar to the one that is closing. However, the new building won?t have a hotel like the YMCA does. The building is currently located at 909 Washington Street.

?I do envision a Y that will be everything that this was and additionally more. It's just going to take some time,? Susan Dinnocenti of the Stamford YMCA said.

The question now is when, where, and how this building will be opened. In the meantime, the YMCA closing is causing problems for its members and residents. The city is working with the Y to find other places for people to live, jobs for those who may be out of work, alternate fitness and day care facilities, and new after-school programs for members.
