Stamford police say the city's former animal shelter director is facing charges for violating state laws and putting the public in danger.

News 12 Connecticut was told that 42-year-old Laurie Hollywood, of Newtown, turned herself in today after city officials claimed she allowed improper adoptions to take place at the shelter.

Earlier this week, Mayor David Martin said on multiple occasions that Hollywood failed to report dogs with a history of biting and other aggressive behavior. Martin says several of those dogs were adopted by people who in turn reported other biting incidents.

Hollywood's lawyer says his client never falsified documents and claims that her arrest is about something else. Some people who have adopted dogs from the shelter also defended Hollywood, saying they never had problems with their pets and found her to be helpful and professional.

News 12 was told Hollywood was released today and is due back in court later this month.
