Firefighters across the state are remembering one of their own killed at the scene of a massive brush fire.

Officials have confirmed that 66-year-old Robert Sharkevich, a Wethersfield firefighter, died after a utility vehicle he was on rolled over at the scene.

Gov. Ned Lamont is directing U.S. and state flags be lowered to half-staff in his honor.

A procession from the scene of the accident to the office of the chief medical examiner in Farmington took place Tuesday night.

The line of engines and vehicles stretched for miles as departments from all over the state escorted the fallen firefighter's body.

The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death. Meriden police are leading the investigation.

The brush fires have been burning this week with the dry conditions and have extended 80 to 90 acres. Fire officials say it could be three to four days before the blaze is contained.

Ken Lesser, the mayor of Wethersfield released this statement:

"We are truly heartbroken at the tragic passing of Wethersfield Firefighter, Robert E Sharkevich Sr. His dedication and bravery will always be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the Wethersfield Fire Department."

"It's definitely felt throughout the surrounding towns, not, you know, just a Wethersfield thing or a Berlin thing or Newington. Whether you know any of these, it's, it's, we're a family, and affects everybody here," said Berlin Fire Chief John Massirio.

Sharkevich was a retired Hartford firefighter and also worked for the Wethersfield School District. There will be counseling services available for staff and students and Wethersfield schools.
