The state is launching a new smartphone app designed to inform residents about emergencies.

Authorities say the new "CT Prepares" app will send real-time notifications to users, including emergency news, state office closings and public safety messages.
It also uses text messages, email and social networking to allow users to communicate with friends and family during an emergency.

"CT Prepares" is available from both the Apple app store and the Google Play store.
