The state is one step closer to requiring earlier background checks on public school employees.
The state's House of Representatives unanimously passed the bill yesterday.
The proposed legislation says each person hired by a local or regional school board would have to undergo state and national criminal checks no later than five days after they start working.
Currently, the checks must be conducted within 30 days.
The bill now goes to the Senate.
