Connecticut officials asked a judge Monday to dismiss the Department of Justice's lawsuit over the state's new restrictions for Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.
The law requires nearly all police to display identification and not wear masks. It also bans arrests in schools, hospitals, churches and playgrounds without a warrant.
The federal government has claimed the law obstructs ICE from enforcing federal law.
Officials argued in the motion that "federal agents could commit crimes and violate Connecticut residents’ rights with impunity, accountable to no one."
The state also wrote that the federal government lacks standing "because Connecticut retains a paramount and inviolable sovereign right to enforce its criminal laws, including against federal officials."
