State police will step up patrols during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period across the state, officials say.

State police and local lawmakers including officials from AAA Northeast held a press conference on travel safety at State Police Troop G headquarters in Bridgeport Wednesday.

Officials say 55 million Americans are expected to travel during the Thanksgiving holiday, and they want everyone who travels in Connecticut to be safe on the roadways.

They say the amount of travelers is the second highest number in the last two decades. 

Connecticut State Police Sgt. Robert Derry say troopers will be cracking down on aggressive driving and drunk driving.

Troopers want to make sure people are wearing their seat belts and don't follow too closely.

They say they will also be checking for drivers who are distracted or on their cellphones.
