Officials say a Bridgeport police officer was involved in a fatal shooting overnight.
Police say the shooting occurred in Success Park. According to investigators, the officer shot a suspect wanted for a crime in South Carolina. Police say when they saw the suspect's car and tried to pull him over, he drove away, crashed through a fence in the park and hit a tree.
At that point, police say the man got out of his car and exchanged gunfire with an officer. The suspect was seriously wounded during the incident and later died at Bridgeport Hospital.
The names of the suspect and the officer have not been released.
The Major Crime Unit of the state police is now investigating the shooting. It is standard procedure for state police to investigate an officer-involved shooting. The officer, a veteran of the Bridgeport Police Department, has been put on administrative duty until the investigation is complete.
