The man who assaulted State Rep. Maryam Khan during a prayer service was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday.
Andrey Desmond was convicted in Hartford Superior Court for the attack that happened last June outside of the XL center.
Desmond will face a total of five years in prison, followed by almost 16 years of special parole.
He must also follow a standing criminal protection order and not contact or go near Khan or her family.
"I'm glad that this has come to a close, I look forward to putting this behind me and moving forward," said Khan outside of the courthouse.
Desmond's lawyer says his client has mental health issues, including schizophrenia.
Khan said this case shows what’s lacking in the country’s mental health system.
