The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry was forced to shut down Sunday because of rough waters resulting from the winter storm.
On some parts of the Long Island Sound, waves reached 8 or 9 feet high. The ferry captain took a few morning trips, then decided to close down. He said that in the last 10 years, they?ve only canceled rides on two and a half days.
The problems weren?t caused by snow, but rather by high wind that created waves. Some residents gathered by the water to watch the waves, but made sure to be out of the way by late afternoon when some harsh flooding was expected to start.
Westport dealt with flooding near Canal Road, and Fairfield had similar issues along Fairfield Beach Road. Fairfield Fire officials warned people to park their vehicles on higher ground for Sunday night.
The ferry is scheduled to be running by the end of the day Sunday.
