News 12 tagged along with Gov. Ned Lamont Thursday to get a look inside a new Amazon fulfillment center under construction in North Haven.
Amazon officials told the governor that they plan to start hiring for the new center this summer. At its peak over the holidays, Amazon says 1,800 people will work at the fulfillment center. Entry-level jobs will start at $15 an hour, including full benefits on day one.
Amazon says the facility can process an order and get it out the door in as little as 30 minutes, thanks in part to the hard work of robots. Officials say robots will be able to be summoned through a tablet to bring pallets to workers, who will then pack them.
Gov. Lamont says Amazon proves Connecticut can attract next generation jobs.
"It's the most state-of-the-art distribution facility in the world. And here they are, located in Connecticut, in part because of our amazing strategic location," says Gov. Lamont.
Amazon will hold several informational meetings over the next two weeks. Anyone interested in applying for a job can do so on the Amazon website.
