An East Lyme woman is the first to contract Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Connecticut this season, the state's Department of Public Health announced.

The woman tested positive for EEE the last week of August and remains in the hospital, state health officials say.

The announcement was made Monday after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention laboratory in Ft. Collins, Colorado, confirmed the presence of antibodies to the virus that causes EEE.

A mosquito carrying EEE also tested positive in the town of Shelton, but officials say no one contracted the disease. Horses in the state have also been found to be infected. 

Officials say EEE is rare but 1 in 3 people who contract can die.

EEE is a rare, but serious and potentially fatal disease that can affect people of all ages.  Officials say it's the first case reported in the state in six years.
