A group of Bridgeport residents on the east side demanded answers Sunday regarding mysterious flooding in their neighborhood.

They say every time it rains, they wonder if their basements are going to flood. Bridgeport City Councilwoman Maria Pereira led the protest, saying that several of her constituents suffered thousands of dollars in property damage when their neighborhood flooded on June 30 and then again on July 3.

She says what makes the flooding so unusual is that her neighborhood is not in a flood zone and nobody can remember something like it ever happening before.

Pereira says photos obtained by News 12 Connecticut taken at the city-owned drainage pond show trees, logs, tires and metal drums blocking rainwater from gradually flowing downstream, which officials now say could have been causing the flooding.

She says since the debris was removed, there has been no flooding resulting from the most recent heavy downpours, possibly suggesting the flooding occurred because the city had not been properly clearing debris from the pond before June 30 when the first flooding occurred.

Bridgeport officials released a statement saying, "The city report is being worked on and reviewed, and will be released to the public when that process is complete."
