A woman who spent 25 years feeding Bridgeport's homeless community has received a special honor, six months after her death.

City officials have designated the corner of West Avenue and John Street "Linda Cervero Way."

They say Cervero, who was known as "the soup lady," began the tradition of feeding the community's homeless population under the bridge on John Street. The beloved volunteer was also known for rescuing animals and mentoring young people.

"This community is coming together in a very, very special way and this physical reminder will also be a spiritual uplift in the same way she was for a quarter of a century," says Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who was on hand for the renaming ceremony.

Cervero passed away in December. She was 69.
