Students in southwestern Connecticut had the day off from school Wednesday due to the snowstorm that hit the area, but may have to make it up at the end of the year.

Local school officials say it was the second snow day for most districts and that usually, snow days are made up at the end of the year by tacking on extra school days to the calendar. According to Darien Schools Superintendent Donald Fiftal, student safety is the first priority when closing schools, not summer vacation.

Some parents say they will have to reschedule their summer plans if their children are required to attend school past the original academic calendar. Fiftal says a meeting with the Board of Education would be arranged if more than five snow days are called this winter. In a worst case scenario, he says students may lose a day or two of their spring breaks.
