A tow truck driver from New York went before a judge Monday following a chase on I-95 early Saturday morning that ended when state police say he intentionally slammed into a parked cruiser.
The state's attorney's office called Jheison Callecastro, 21, a significant threat to the public's safety during his arraignment.
Court records show that Callecastro told police he was on call for the towing company Friday night into Saturday morning, but went to a bar in White Plains, New York. He allegedly said he took off when a White Plains officer tried to pull him over, citing a fear of getting a DUI.
The police report shows that Callecastro said he thought he would be OK once he crossed into Connecticut. Instead, Connecticut State Police continued the pursuit from Greenwich to Norwalk and then back to Greenwich, where police set up stop sticks before Exit 3 on I-95. That's when police say Callecastro deliberately swerved into an unoccupied cruiser parked next to the median. Court records say Callecastro denied intentionally hitting the car as he could not avoid it.
Police say Callecastro had glassy eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol at the time of his arrest. The police report states that he failed a field sobriety test.
