For five years, the husband-and-wife team of Chris and Alina Caldarariu has been sharing their Romanian culture with all who eat at Transilvania Restaurant & Bar.

After two years in Fairfield, the restaurant is now located in one of the state's oldest buildings in East Haven. The Old Mill dates back as far as 1655, when the Old Mill site was used as a forge for the first iron works in Connecticut.

Decorated with skeletons, werewolves and an emphasis on Dracula, Alina says one one the reasons she wanted to open a restaurant was to share the history of Vlad the Impaler, also known as Vlad Dracula. He is considered one of the country's most important rulers and is a national hero of Romania. Vlad the Impaler was said to be the inspiration for the character in Bram Stoker's "Dracula."

The food there, all prepared fresh, comes from 100-year-old recipes handed down for generations in Alina's family. Many are made with fresh ingredients from Romania, Hungary and other Eastern European countries. The bar features signature drinks - including "Dracula's Kiss," which is made with "fresh blood" (not really) and comes adorned with a set of fangs.

Alina and Chris invite you to their "FANG-tastic" destination, and they say they are "DYING to meet you."
