Officials say more than 10,000 vehicles are stolen each year in Connecticut. It?s the job of the Connecticut Regional Auto Theft Task Force to try and get those vehicles back. The task force, started in 1995, is made up of state and local police and representatives from the Department of Motor Vehicles. As part of the program, a vehicle owner can authorize the police to stop their vehicle if it is operating between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. The officer will then determine whether the vehicle has been stolen. The task force also conducts long-term investigations to arrest thieves, looks to break up chop shops, and offers tips to car owners about how to prevent theft. Members of the task force say if your car is stolen, do not call 911 because it is not considered an emergency. They say you should call the local police with as much information as possible.
