For dozens of Long Island teenagers with dreams of becoming firefighters, Camp Fahrenheit 5-1-6 is providing a firsthand look at what it takes to serve on the front lines.

The weeklong camp at the Nassau County Fire Academy in Bethpage gives young volunteers an opportunity to experience many of the challenges firefighters face, from handling hoses to navigating simulated fire scenes in full gear.

Among the nearly 50 teens participating is 15-year-old Anthony Krussmann, of Wantagh, who hopes to one day follow in his father's footsteps.

"My dad, he's a chief in Wantagh, so he really inspired me to get into it," Krussmann said.

Camp participants are already involved with their local fire departments as junior volunteers. Throughout the week, they take part in hands-on training exercises designed to prepare them for future service.

"It's going to give them a taste of what they're going to be going through at the scene of a fire," said Jerry Presta, of the Nassau County Junior Firefighters Association.

Angel Molinawong, of Merrick, said the experience has been rewarding.

"It's going great, great experience right now," Molinawong said.

The training includes simulated searches inside smoke-filled structures, operating fire hoses and learning to work while wearing heavy protective equipment in high-heat conditions.

"It gets really hot," Krussmann said.

Organizers say programs like Camp Fahrenheit 5-1-6 play a critical role in developing the next generation of volunteer firefighters as departments across Long Island face recruitment challenges.

"The recruitment of firefighters is down, so this is a great thing to keep them involved and engaged until they reach the age to join their regular departments," Presta said.

Camp leaders hope the experience helps inspire more young volunteers to continue serving their communities and eventually join local fire departments as active firefighters.
