Darien police say a man fired his gun at three people who attempted to break into his home on Five Mile River Road around 6 a.m. Thursday.

Neighbors told News 12 they saw multiple police cars and officers taking photos near the intersection of Five Mile River Road and Berry Lane as they were leaving for work and school.

News 12 cameras also found a home with its front screen door duct‑taped and a detached screen sitting on the porch.

Police say the homeowners noticed three people looking around their porch, where the suspects apparently found a spare key they used to enter the house.

As they were coming in, the homeowner saw one of the suspects had a gun, according to the Darien Police Department. Police say the family includes two small children, and the homeowner fired his own gun, causing the suspects to run away.

Police say a boy under 18 who matches the description of one of the suspects later showed up at Bridgeport Hospital with a gunshot wound, but they cannot yet confirm whether he was involved.

The DPD says it tracked down the suspects’ car and determined it had been stolen from Fairfield before the attempted burglary.

Residents in the area say there have been numerous attempted car break‑ins in recent months.

A resident of the home told News 12 off‑camera that, considering everything, the family is doing OK.
