Residents gathered in Stamford Monday night to rally around the immigrant community.

Together We Stand was organized as a reaction to the mass shooting in El Paso and other events that organizers say have left people living in fear.

They wanted a large demonstration of unity and a chance for immigrants to feel empowered by sharing their stories.

"It is a scary time. It really is scary, but I do it because it helps other people. It is worse if you stay silent," says Michael Hernandez.

Organizers wanted to demonstrate support for families who use services such as the English classes at Building One Community.

Some people painted a mural of a bridge over the weekend that served as a backdrop for Monday night's event.

People told News 12 say they do feel hopeful and inspired that community spirit can overcome prejudice.
