Transport Workers Union (TWU) President Roger Touissant began his 10-day jail sentence Monday for the illegal strike that crippled the city in December.
Labor leaders and union members walked with Touissant over the Brooklyn Bridge to the Manhattan jailhouse. Some Touissant supporters say the judge?s ruling was too harsh. In addition to the 10-day jail sentence, the judge fined the TWU $2.5 million for breaking the Taylor Law.
Supporters for Touissant plan to hold daily vigils outside the jailhouse until May 4 when the union leader is expected to be released.
