United Illuminating will start its eviction of monk parakeet nests from power lines Thursday after a delay caused by bad weather.
UI says it plans to start in West Haven and possibly in Stratford. According to the power company, the nests are a fire hazard and have been responsible for power outages in the past.
While some residents say the nests should be removed, Friends of Animals President Priscilla Feral says the removal of the nests could have a devastating impact on the birds. Feral adds that this time of year, the parakeet chicks are hatching. Other residents say they like having the parakeets in their neighborhoods.
UI says it will also remove 66 nests in other locations, including Orange, New Haven and East Haven.
