Megan Gomez was in her second trimester last year when she began to feel unwell.
At LIJ, the Uniondale mom-to-be found out why: she was in heart failure.
Gomez had mitral stenosis, also called mitral valve stenosis, which meant she had a narrowed heart valve and it needed to be fixed with a procedure called a mitral valve balloon valvuloplasty.
Just two days before having the procedure, Gomez got married – while in the hospital. The staff rallied around her. A pillowcase served as her veil and a white nurse's coat acted as gown.
A few months after having the successful procedure, Gomez gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Rose, who is now 8 months old. She and her husband Jonathan celebrated their one-year anniversary, and they’re looking forward to enjoying Megan’s first Mother’s Day as a mom.
