Veterans fear dispersal of services as Bridgeport Health Dept. HQ closes for repairs
Veterans are protesting following an announcement Thursday that the Bridgeport Health Department headquarters at 752 East Main St. will soon be shut down for safety repairs.
Director Maritza Bond announced that the building is no longer safe to be occupied.
Veterans rely on the center for the wide array of services offered at the department – from regular transportation to the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven to counseling for PTSD.
Bond says that because she is sensitive to the concerns of the veterans, all services will be moved into temporary offices to be located at the same address to avoid interruption.
Veteran Gilbert Burton said, “My worry is that…we're going to have to travel all over the place to get the assistance that we need.”
The veterans say they’re concerned, in spite of reassurances from the city, that all the services now offered at the department will be dispersed across the region.
City officials say they have not yet set a date to close the building.
