A warning has been issued about a new scam targeting college athletes in Connecticut and their families where scammers are requesting payment and creating a sense of urgency.
Authorities say the scam involves a caller identifying themselves as a member of the university's police department, calls a parent and says that their student-athlete has been given citations for open container, curfew violation or trespassing.
Then the caller requests immediate payment through a cash app.
If you receive a suspicious call that is similar to this, officials say to hang up and call your local police department to report it.
